While small in reach, with 63 stores in 22 states and Washington, D.C., it turned in nearly $707 million in sales for the most recent fiscal year, a number that rose from $633.6 million the year before and $568.8 million the one prior to that.<br />It's done this by expanding on one basic idea – give people a mind-boggling array of ways to partition their stuff. Go to one of the stores, generally found in the nice part of town, and you'll see that if you need something to hold something, there's a reasonably good chance Container Store has it. The hooks category alone lists 362 options, and toy storage has 264 separate items. There are 210 garage-related products, and 67 listings for shoe storage and care.<br />Whether it's wine racks for the kitchen, Elfa shelving, flat boxes for the bedroom or shower caddies for the bathroom, they have it. You can pay a lot -- the <a data-mce-href="http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10022211&N=1000075&Ns=p_price_sort|1" data-rapid_p="2" href="http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10022211&N=1000075&Ns=p_price_sort%7C1" target="_blank">priciest closet set-up</a> is $3,893 if you put it in yourself. Or you can pay a little -- of the 5,713 items Container Store's website prices individually, nearly 84% are $25 or less. You could spend over $200 for a <a data-mce-href="http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10022111&N=1000039&Nao=100&Ns=p_price_sort|1" data-rapid_p="3" href="http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10022111&N=1000039&Nao=100&Ns=p_price_sort%7C1" target="_blank">three-tiered cart</a>, or $3.99 for a <a data-mce-href="http://www.containerstore.com/shop/travel/cosmeticsToiletries?productId=10027586&green=4C71BCF6-552E-54B7-9612-5F4C0C7B648D" data-rapid_p="4" href="http://www.containerstore.com/shop/travel/cosmeticsToiletries?productId=10027586&green=4C71BCF6-552E-54B7-9612-5F4C0C7B648D" target="_blank">razor case</a>.<br />You get the picture. But it's not as much what Container Store does as how it says it does it that contributes to its success. It's been praised by influential types like Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey for its clever designs. It donates money to local charities when it opens a new store. And more than anything, it believes in <a data-mce-href="http://standfor.containerstore.com/putting-our-employees-first/" data-rapid_p="5" href="http://standfor.containerstore.com/putting-our-employees-first/" target="_blank">paying employees</a> what amounts to a premium salary for retail. Whereas Walmart (<a data-mce-href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=wmt" data-rapid_p="6" href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=wmt" target="_blank">WMT</a>) or RadioShack (<a data-mce-href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=rsh" data-rapid_p="7" href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=rsh" target="_blank">RSH</a>) might pay<a data-mce-href="http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/the-exchange/company-gap-191752718.html" data-rapid_p="8" href="http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/the-exchange/company-gap-191752718.html" target="_blank"> less than $9 an hour</a>, many Container Store sales staff report to <a data-mce-href="http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Container-Store-Salaries-E4462.htm" data-rapid_p="9" href="http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Container-Store-Salaries-E4462.htm" target="_blank">Glassdoor.com</a> making more than $12.50 an hour. That's well above the $7.25 federal minimum wage. Store managers say they average $63,000 a year.<br /><strong>Politics at the door</strong><br />It's not a stretch to say that Container Store may either appeal to you or put you off depending on your worldview. If you take comfort in chains embracing progressive ideals about fair pay and <a data-mce-href="http://standfor.containerstore.com/our-commitment-to-the-environment/" data-rapid_p="10" href="http://standfor.containerstore.com/our-commitment-to-the-environment/" target="_blank">protecting the Earth</a>, this could be your place. If you drive a hybrid, believe Starbucks (<a data-mce-href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=sbux" data-rapid_p="11" href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=sbux" target="_blank">SBUX</a>) gets it with coffee sourcing, or you shop at Whole Foods (<a data-mce-href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=wfm" data-rapid_p="12" href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=wfm" target="_blank">WFM</a>) – whose co-founder John Mackey espouses the <a data-mce-href="http://www.amazon.com/Conscious-Capitalism-Liberating-Heroic-Business/dp/1422144208" data-rapid_p="13" href="http://www.amazon.com/Conscious-Capitalism-Liberating-Heroic-Business/dp/1422144208" target="_blank">Conscious Capitalism</a> tenets shared by Container Store CEO <a data-mce-href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/14/business/14corners.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0" data-rapid_p="14" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/14/business/14corners.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0" target="_blank">Kip Tindell</a> -- you may want to buy your boxes here.<br />Should you find such talk preachy, you view spending anything on a mesh washing bag to be excessive, you don't have a problem with McDonald's (<a data-mce-href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=mcd" data-rapid_p="15" href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=mcd" target="_blank">MCD</a>), or you get around in a Dodge Ram, you might prefer parting with your money elsewhere.<br />The Container Store, in short, wastes no chance to discuss <a data-mce-href="http://standfor.containerstore.com/our-foundation-principles/" data-rapid_p="16" href="http://standfor.containerstore.com/our-foundation-principles/" target="_blank">how it operates</a>. Regulatory documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission before its initial public offering lay out the company's philosophy, which begins and ends with an "employee-first" mantra. "Taking care of our employees is The Container Store's top priority, so we continually invest in their recruitment, training and overall job satisfaction," it says.<br />And it doesn't hire just any person who wants a job, saying it takes fewer than 4% of applicants each year. Training is long, and complete benefits are typical. With pay being what it is, full-time worker turnover is only around 10%, and year after year, it lands Container Store on Fortune's list of the <a data-mce-href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/best-companies/2013/snapshots/16.html?iid=bc_fl_list" data-rapid_p="17" href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/best-companies/2013/snapshots/16.html?iid=bc_fl_list" target="_blank">best places to work</a>. (That said, not every review is sterling, with some employees saying anonymously on Glassdoor that the company is <a data-mce-href="http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Container-Store-Reviews-E4462.htm" data-rapid_p="18" href="http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Container-Store-Reviews-E4462.htm" target="_blank">far from perfect</a>.)<br /><br />The company insists its way works, appealing both to a broad demographic along with its core customers, whom it describes as "predominantly female, affluent, highly educated and busy. " Same-store sales, an important statistic for retailers, have been positive for 13 straight quarters, suggesting there's at least some truth to it.<br /><strong>What isn't ideal</strong><br />Not everything's entirely rosy financially, however. Container Store isn't profitable, owing partly to accounting adjustments, though its bottom line has been improving and analysts expect a profit soon.<br />Gross margins are impressive, but some costs are quite subtantial, no doubt reflecting payroll levels to a degree. Selling, general and administrative expenses are more than 45% of revenue, well above industry norms. For nine of the 10 largest American retailers, excluding Amazon (<a data-mce-href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=amzn" data-rapid_p="19" href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=amzn" target="_blank">AMZN</a>), the average is around 19%. At Bed Bath & Beyond (<a data-mce-href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=bbby" data-rapid_p="20" href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=bbby" target="_blank">BBBY</a>), a semi-competitor to Container Store, the percentage is under 26%. The company does give a nod to this, noting that its SG&A outlays "may not be comparable to the components of similar measures of other retailers," so investors and analysts will sort that out over time.<br />Its current debt load, more than $390 million, is arguably on the high side. Still, credit-rating agency <a data-mce-href="https://www.moodys.com/research/Moodys-upgrades-Container-Stores-CFR-to-B2-outlook-stable--PR_286885?WT.mc_id=NLTITLE_YYYYMMDD_PR_286885" data-rapid_p="21" href="https://www.moodys.com/research/Moodys-upgrades-Container-Stores-CFR-to-B2-outlook-stable--PR_286885?WT.mc_id=NLTITLE_YYYYMMDD_PR_286885" target="_blank">Moody's</a> believes it has adequate cash and borrowing ability for the time being.<br /><div id="yui_3_9_1_1_1385893505193_1202">Stock analysts started rolling out their opinions on the company this week. They're not universally upbeat considering where Container Store is trading relative to its IPO price (it's gained some 15% from its first trade at $35), but <a data-mce-href="http://247wallst.com/retail/2013/11/26/the-container-store-analyst-quiet-period-ends-some-stay-hot-some-not/" data-rapid_p="22" href="http://247wallst.com/retail/2013/11/26/the-container-store-analyst-quiet-period-ends-some-stay-hot-some-not/" target="_blank">they are mostly supportive</a> of its prospects.</div>Container Store believes it can get to 300 or more stores in the U.S., although the company hasn't assigned a timeline to that goal. To do so, it will need to start setting up shops at a faster clip than it historically has. Since its beginning in 1978, it's averaged opening under two stores a year. At that rate, it would take 132 years to get to the target, so obviously the buildout will be somewhat aggressive.<br />More than anything, it may just need to convince American consumers that business with a conscience is worth a few extra dollars out of their pockets.

Why am I so obsessed with clean brushes? The answer is simple: dirty brushes make my skin break out. I first wet my brushes with water, then I lather up my brushes, and continue rinsing them until the water that runs off of them is clear. I strongly encourage taking a mascara break at least once a week.<br />-Your pillowcase is sad.<br />With so many quick and easy cleansers, there is just no excuse to sleep in makeup. When I was in my early twenties I was guilty of this bad habit. I would go out fully smokey eye-ified, dance and sweat all night and then fall into bed. My skin suffered and now at age 32, even if I indulge in red wine, I never ever neglect my routine. I drag myself to the sink and do the whole sha-bang. Get me in a room with one and I will emerge hours later with pencil-thin eyebrows and "picked at" skin. No one needs to see their face that close, it only results in disaster.<br />Here's the thing, it is really difficult to tweeze your eyebrows yourself. Creating symmetry is challenging and one rogue tweeze can result in holes in your eyebrows. Eyebrows are very temperamental. More often than not, your mistake will be permanent. I fully encourage tweezing strays that are FAR away from the actual shape of your eyebrow, but be very conservative. Leave the care and beauty of your eyebrows in the hands of someone you trust. Find an aesthetician that understands your needs and then stick with them. (AP)</div></div>ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Across the last disastrous half of the season, as Michigan losses piled up and even victories were laced with futility, Brady Hoke had been mocked, cussed and even fired (at least by some fans).<br />So here on a sunny-but-cold last Saturday of November, with Michigan trailing Ohio State by a single point and 32 seconds left, Hoke was faced with a decision that really wasn't – kick an extra point to likely force overtime, or go for two and try to take the lead.<br />"We play the game to win," Hoke said.<br />So Hoke tried for the win, setting up one of the most dramatic plays this old and storied rivalry had ever seen. It left 113,211 people – whether clad in maize and blue, or scarlet and gray – holding their breath.<br /><div id="yui-tmp-94">It didn't work. Devin Gardner's two-point conversion pass was picked off and <a data-rapid_p="13" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/ohio-state-stays-unbeaten-michigan-two-point-try-210415298--ncaaf.html">Ohio State rolled out of Ann Arbor with a 42-41 victory</a> and a 12-0 regular season heading into next week's Big Ten championship against Michigan State. <span class="yui-editorial-embed" id="yui_3_0_0-2-13858453257931394"><span id="schemaorg"> </span></span>"I would've done the same thing," Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said. (USA Today)</div></div>Hoke's decision will be called gutsy and to a point it was. It also wasn't that gutsy. His team was a huge underdog. The season was already shot, ending in a 7-5 record. <a data-rapid_p="15" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/ohio-state-buckeyes-michigan-wolverines-201311300029/">His defense couldn't stop the Buckeyes</a> and Carlos Hyde (226 rushing yards) in particular, so the promise of overtime wasn't bright. His kicker was spotty. Even in failing to convert, he was roundly (and predictably) praised just for attempting it.<br />Everyone loves a coach who tries to win, rather than simply not lose. <br />The mistake, if there was one, was apparently the play that was called. Ohio State had it scouted. They called timeout, got everyone a deep breath and the players said they were told Michigan would run one of just two plays. The one the Wolverines attempted – a short pass to Drew Dileo coming out of a three-receiver stack – was one of them.<br />So they suspected what was coming. Tyvis Powell jumped the route and made the play. It is perhaps the greatest testament to the juggernaut Meyer has built down in Columbus. Even in the most desperate of moments, the Buckeyes are not just prepared, but more than capable of calmly executing it.<br />And so that was that.<br />"That's an instant classic," said Meyer, whose team found a way to <a data-rapid_p="16" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/ohio-state-buckeyes-michigan-wolverines-201311300029/">win its 24th consecutive game since he's become coach</a> and hang in the BCS chase even if the manner of victory wasn't especially impressive.<br />This was a full-on rivalry game though, where records and rankings don't matter, where every point is earned, where the underdog doesn't quit. <br />These games aren't supposed to be easy. That's why they rarely are. Ohio State beat Michigan. It shouldn't ever apologize for that. If some BCS poll voters somewhere feel differently, well, whatever.<br />On this day Ohio State could only celebrate. The truth was, these weren't the Wolverines of the last month they'd just defeated. This was the Michigan team that looked good on paper in the preseason. After averaging just 216.5 yards per game over the last four games, they racked up 603 on Saturday."We're Michigan," said offensive tackle Taylor Lewan. "We're bred to fight." <br />Where that fight was all year is anyone's guess. Hoke has said he likes the direction the program is headed, but this is still a five-loss team. While most of the postgame comments were positive, apparently the mood in the locker room was as sad as losing a game in this rivalry demands.<br /><span id="schemaorg"></span> <br />"We have a bunch of kids who fought hard for Michigan, played hard to the bitter end," said athletic director Dave Brandon, who has assured his coach will be around for years and years. "As we did so many times this season we were two yards away from a huge victory. But there are a lot of tears in the locker room because they didn't come here to play well. They came here to win." <br />So is this, even in year three of the Hoke tenure, a sign of what's the come? Will Michigan soon return to the elite of at least the conference, if not the nation? Or was this a sign of the state of this rivalry – the Buckeyes winning for the 11th time in 13 tries and Michigan stuck soothing its pain with close scores, great efforts and gutsy calls? <br />"I don't know if you can get an identity in one game, but I'll be very excited to see if we play with the same passion [in the next game]," Hoke said. <br />Ohio State's next game is Saturday in Indianapolis against Michigan State – a Big Ten title on the line, maybe even more. For Michigan – watching its two chief rivals play for a championship – is like having to choose which finger to have chopped off. <br /><div id="yui-tmp-90">For Hoke, there is no sugarcoating what this year is about. He was reminded that his first year when Michigan went 11-2, beat Ohio State and won a BCS bowl game. He deemed it a failure anyway. "We have goals here. The goal is to win the Big Ten championship. Every year. We have 42 of them. More than anybody else. We want a 43rd."<br />That'll have to wait. A season of great promise ended with Hoke walking out of his press conference to find two men wearing canary yellow Fiesta Bowl blazers waiting to shake his hand. They were bowl execs, yet they weren't there to invite the Wolverines to a top-line BCS event. It's their secondary offering, the humble Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, where Michigan will likely wind up.<br />"We're looking to stay in touch," one said. <br />"Yeah, good to see you," Hoke said. <br />Not far away, behind Michigan Stadium, five victorious Ohio State buses idled. Unbeaten Buckeyes climbed aboard carrying box lunches from KFC and wearing big satisfied smiles – everything is still possible for them. <br />There are no moral victories or signs of potential or promises of a better day for Urban Meyer's Buckeyes. There are just victories, one after the next after the next after the next.

In a food processor, pulse the cookies with 1/4 teaspoon of salt until finely ground. Scrape the cookies into a 9-inch pie plate. Stir in the melted butter, 1/2 tablespoon at a time, until the crumbs are the texture of wet sand; you may not need to use all of the butter. Using your fingers, press the crumbs evenly over the bottom and up the side of the pie plate. Freeze the crust for 15 minutes.<br />2. Bake the crust for about 10 minutes, until lightly golden. Let cool on a rack.<br />3. In a medium bowl, combine the peanut butter with the cream cheese, 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of salt and mix until thoroughly blended. In another bowl, whip 3/4 cup of the <span class="yshortcuts cs4-ndcor" id="lw_1385823909779_8">heavy cream</span> until stiff. Whisk the <span class="yshortcuts cs4-visible" id="lw_1385823909779_7">whipped cream</span> into the peanut butter mixture. Spread the peanut butter filling in the crust in an even layer. Refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes.<br />4. In the same whipped-cream bowl, whip the remaining 1 cup of heavy cream and 2 tablespoons of sugar with the vanilla until stiff. Spread the whipped cream over the pie. Sprinkle the pie with the chopped peanuts, cut into slices and serve.

Thirty-two people were injured of whom 18 were later discharged.<br />"You can imagine the terror of the situation when a helicopter came through the top of the building," House said. <br />"We are dealing with a very sensitive investigation and operation here. It will go on for many days yet."<br />The injured had "chest injuries, head injuries, long-bone fractures and lacerations", said Jennifer Armstrong, medical director of the Greater Glasgow Health Board.<br />Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond called it a "black day" and ordered flags to fly at half-mast.<br />A minute's silence was held ahead of a football match between Falkirk and Rangers.<br />"But it's also St. Andrew's Day and it's a day we can take pride and courage in how we respond to adversity and tragedy," said the nationalist leader, who just days ago was celebrating the release of a legal blueprint for Scottish independence.<br />Queen Elizabeth said her prayers were with the victims while Prime Minister David Cameron praised the "bravery of the ordinary Glaswegians" who rushed to help.

Tim Tebow pep talk can't save Gators in blowout loss to Jameis Winston's Seminoles

The Heisman winner spoke to the team before its game against No. 2 Florida State and delivered a message as only he can. <br />"It really penetrated my soul," said offensive lineman <a class="yom-entity-link yom-entity-sports_player" data-rapid_p="11" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/players/193850">Max Garcia</a>, his eyes watering slightly. "And it was real."<br />Tebow told the Gators that any man who gets knocked down has the ability to get back up, according to Garcia, but, "A man can get down and come back withered, can come back beaten. But a man that goes down and comes back and is changed and is different, that's who we are; that's who the Gators are."<br />The entire team was "locked in," and Florida came out of the locker room with an urgency that hasn't been seen much around this town for the majority of its first losing season since 1979. And <a class="yom-entity-link yom-entity-sports_player" data-rapid_p="14" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/players/216087">Jameis Winston</a> led just the way Tebow used to when he played in this rivalry game.<span class="yui-editorial-embed" id="yui_3_0_0-2-13858455249161329"><span id="schemaorg"></span></span> <br />Of course, any comparison between Tebow and Winston is strictly on the field. Winston has been accused of rape, and if he's charged and convicted, he'll disgrace his university. <br /><br />For now, however, he is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, and his on-field leadership was on full display Saturday. Before a 96-yard second-quarter drive that changed the game for good, he told his offensive teammates, "This drive is going to define this game."<br />He was right. The Gators defenders were so hyped up before the drive that they were literally dancing on the field, waiting for Winston and his brethren to line up. The energy and noise could have easily overwhelmed many quarterbacks, but the freshman leader remained composed. <br />The Seminoles responded to Winston, "I got you!" And Winston came back with "OK, let's do it."<br />Winston converted a third-and-25, and the rout was on from there. The Seminoles finished the drive with a 45-yard touchdown catch by <a class="yom-entity-link yom-entity-sports_player" data-rapid_p="15" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/players/205099">Kelvin Benjamin</a> and ran away with the game. <a data-rapid_p="16" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/florida-state-seminoles-florida-gators-201311300067/">A 10-0 deficit spiraled into a 37-7 yawner</a>. What could have been a serious challenge to a national championship bid turned into yet another lopsided win for the Seminoles in an 11-0 regular season.<br />That resilience, fueled in part by Winston's words and his ability, is something the Gators lack. Florida coach Will Muschamp cited a "woe is me" mentality after the game, mentioning "tough situations I wish we handled a little better." Muschamp has told the team "life is not fair," but that hasn't seemed to register. <a data-rapid_p="17" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/georgia-southern-eagles-florida-gators-201311230067/">Florida didn't lose to Georgia Southern last week</a> because of its injuries; it lost because it didn't have the right mindset. That's something only peers can build and maintain. <br /><div id="yui-tmp-91">Winston is that kind of peer for the Seminoles. He called out Benjamin last night in front of the entire team, challenging him and telling him, "You're an unstoppable force." <a data-rapid_p="18" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/florida-state-seminoles-florida-gators-201311300067/">Benjamin then went out and had 212 yards and three touchdowns</a> on Saturday. The Gators went to Tallahassee last season and whipped the Seminoles on their own field, and that Florida State team had 11 players who went on to the NFL. The Florida season highlight video, played for the team last night, had many clips from that game. <br /><br />The Gators moved to 11-1 that day, and Muschamp truly thought he had the best team in the country. Now the coach is fighting for his job. The difference isn't just personnel. This season, small setbacks turned not into motivation, but into horrendous losses and embarrassing behavior like that shown Saturday by a Gators player <a data-rapid_p="19" href="http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/11/30/5160668/ronald-powell-spit-gif-fsu-vs-florida" target="_blank">who apparently spat at a Seminoles player</a> during a stoppage in play. Part of that is on Muschamp, who clearly hasn't known what to say to turn the tide of negativity, but there was a season-long void in the locker room that he could not fill. </div>Winston, on the other hand, seems to always know what to say. Friday night, he asked teammates how many of them had ever been undefeated on any level. Not many raised their hands. It was a reminder of the situation, and the opportunity. <br />Tebow tried to do the same on Saturday: Remind the Gators of the situation, and the opportunity. "I'm going to stick to that for the rest of my life," Garcia said. <br />"When I saw him, I could just feel his leadership," Garcia added. "His presence, it just demanded that."<br />Every great team needs presence on the field. Florida State showed it Saturday. Florida has lost it completely.

Our ancient people imagined they were a moon palace, osmanthus trees, and a jade rabbit," he said.<br />The rover's designer, Shanghai Aerospace Systems Engineering Research Institute, claims several technological breakthroughs with the vehicle.<br />The Shanghai-based institute, a unit of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., which is linked to the military, says the advances include its "autonomous" navigation system and the way the wheels are able to grip the powdery surface of the moon.<br />It can climb inclines of up to 30 degrees and travel up to 200 metres (yards) per hour, according to the institute.<br />The showcasing of the rover came on the same day that India was due to launch its first mission to Mars, aiming to become the only Asian nation to reach the Red Planet.<br />China's space programme has advanced significantly in the last decade. In October China marked the 10th anniversary of its first manned space flight.<br />When Yang Liwei orbited the Earth 14 times during his 21-hour flight aboard the Shenzhou 5 in 2003 Beijing was so concerned about the viability of the mission that it cancelled a nationwide live television broadcast of the launch at the last minute.<br />But since then, China has sent a total of 10 astronauts -- eight men and two women -- into space on five separate missions, and launched an orbiting space module, Tiangong-1.<br />The rapid, purposeful development of China's space programme is in sharp contrast with the US, which launched its final space shuttle flight in 2011 and whose next step remains uncertain amid waning domestic support for spending federal dollars on space exploration.<br />Nonetheless, China is still behind the achievements of the US and Russia -- both of which it has learned from.
