It usually starts with a sudden and frequent need to visit the potty. When you get there, you can squeeze out only a little bit of urine, and that’s usually accompanied by a burning sensation in your bladder and/or urethra. Baking Soda</b><br /><br />UTIs that last longer than two days require medical intervention. Untreated UTIs can infect the kidneys and turn into a much more serious problem. To help prevent a UTI from developing or nip one in the bud, try adding 1 teaspoon baking soda to a glass of water as it may help ease your infection. The soda neutralizes the acidity in your urine, speeding along your recovery.<br /><br /><b>2. Blueberries</b><br /><br />Blueberries and cranberries are from the same plant family and seem to have the same bacteria-inhibiting properties. In one study, blueberry juice was found to prevent UTIs. Since you’re not likely to find a gallon of blueberry juice at your local store, try sprinkling a handful of these flavorful, good-for-you berries over your morning cereal.<br /><br /><b>3. Cranberry Juice</b><br /><br />Many studies have found that drinking cranberry juice may help you avoid urinary tract infections. It appears that cranberry juice prevents infection-causing bacteria from bedding down in your bladder, and it also has a very mild antibiotic affect. Drinking as little as 4 ounces of cranberry juice a day can help keep your bladder infection-free. But if you tend to get UTIs or are dealing with one right now, try to drink at least 2 to 4 glasses of cranberry juice a day. If pure cranberry juice is just too bitter for your taste buds, you can substitute cranberry juice cocktail . It seems to have the same effect as the pure stuff. Take note: If you have a UTI, cranberry juice is not a replacement for doctor-prescribed antibiotics in treating your infection.<br /><br /><b>4. Pineapple</b><br /><br />Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapples. In one study, people with a UTI who were given bromelain along with their usual round of antibiotics got rid of their infection. Half the people who were given a placebo plus an antibiotic showed no signs of lingering infection. Eating a cup of pineapple tastes good and may just help rid you of your infection.<br /><br /><b>5. Water</b><br /><br />If you tend to get urinary tract infections, be sure to drink plenty of water — about 8 eight-ounce glasses a day. You should be urinating at least every four to five hours. If you are currently dealing with an infection, drink buckets of water to fight it off. Drink a full 8 ounces of water every hour. The river of water in your system will help flush out bacteria by making you urinate more frequently.<br /><br />You can also heat up some water on the stove and pour it into a hot water bottle. Place the water bottle on your lower abdomen to help ease any pain caused by the infection.<br /><br /><b>6. Vitamin C</b><br /><br />Some doctors are prescribing at least 5,000 mg or more of vitamin C a day for patients who develop recurrent urinary tract infections. Vitamin C keeps the bladder healthy by acidifying the urine, essentially putting up a no-trespassing sign for potentially harmful bacteria.<strong><br /><br />7. Do’s and Don’ts</strong><ul><li>DO use it. When you’ve got to go, go. It sounds simple, but how many  times have you held it — when you’re in a business meeting, when you’re  stuck in traffic, when you’re at a concert and the lines are too long.  If you hold your urine, you’re more likely to get a backup of bacteria  and end up with an infection.</li><li>DO consider cotton. Anything that comes into close contact with any  of those ultra-personal areas should be cotton. Women should wear cotton  underwear or cotton-lined panty hose to help stay fresher and dryer.  Guys should go for boxer shorts.</li><li>DON’T drink alcohol. Alcohol is an irritant to your bladder, just what you don’t need when you’re dealing with an infection.</li><li>DO cut the caffeine. Also avoid caffeine-loaded drinks such as  caffeinated soda pop, coffee, and tea. Caffeine can irritate the  bladder, which is the last thing you need when a UTI has taken hold.</li><li>DO pull out a nonprescription pain reliever. Taking acetaminophen,  ibuprofen, or aspirin can help ease the pain during your infection.</li><li>DO follow the rules for making love. If you have trouble with UTIs,  be sure you and your partner clean up before making love. After you make  love, head to the bathroom to urinate and get rid of any potentially  harmful bacteria. And try using a condom instead of a diaphragm.  Diaphragms may promote UTIs.</li><li>DO go with the flow. After urinating, be sure to wipe from front to back to keep bacteria from getting close to the urethra.</li></ul>These home remedies can help you prevent a UTI or eliminate one  already in progress. The research team first  interviewed the study participants in 2006, when all had normal blood  pressure. Based on data collected at the follow-up interview and blood  pressure measurement four years later, in 2010, the investigators  reported that those seniors who devoted 200 hours per year to volunteer  work were 40 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure than the  seniors in the study who didn’t volunteer. The specific type of  volunteer work didn’t appear to matter, the researchers, said. The most  important factor was the amount of time spent – 200 hours per year. The  investigators concluded that their study results “give older adults an  example of something that they can actively do to remain healthy and age  successfully.” The study was published by the American Psychological  Association’s <em>Psychology and Aging</em> journal. <br />My take? This is a welcome example of how fostering human  relationships can affect health in a positive way. I believe that unless  we experience meaningful connections to others, we put ourselves at  risk of developing spiritual, mental and, ultimately, physical illness.  Regular opportunities in the community include feeding the homeless;  helping people with terminal illnesses; and helping to clean up the  environment. If you don’t feel that you want to get formally involved  with an organization, you can always do things on your own, such as  helping shut-ins, offering transportation to elderly or disabled  neighbors and tutoring or reading to children. The possibilities are  endless. Once you take that first step I’m sure you’ll find that your  service work quickly becomes one of your more rewarding healthy habits.

Just  taking a short stroll after each meal is all seniors may need to do in  order to lower their blood sugar levels and protect against diabetes. A  small study at George Washington University demonstrated that taking  15-minute walks after meals was “significantly more effective” for  lowering blood sugar than a longer walk at another time during the day.  The research team recruited 10 healthy seniors age 60 and older who were  at risk of type 2 diabetes because of high levels of fasting blood  sugar and low levels of physical activity. During the study the  participants walked on a treadmill at what the researchers described as  an “easy to moderate pace”. They were assigned to walk at various times, including 15 minutes  after each meal or for 45 minutes at 10:30 in the morning or 4:30 in the  afternoon. The researchers reported that the walk most effective at  controlling blood sugar was the one taken after the evening meal. The  research team explained that the rise in blood sugar normally seen after  dinner was “curbed significantly” as soon as the participants started  to walk on the treadmill. The study was published on June 12, 2013 in <em>Diabetes Care</em>.

10 Natural Remedy for Athlete’s Foot

The fungus, Tinea pedis, grows between the toes, on top of the feet, on  toenails and between the fingers. White patches, scaly patches, and  redness are all indicative of the fungus. Symptoms of athlete’s foot may  include itching, burning, and stinging. Athletes foot fungus frequents public showers and locker rooms,  indoor swimming pools and health clubs, and it is very contagious.  Contact with shoes or socks containing the fungus, wet floors, or  exercise equipment (remember it can live between fingers too) can spread  it.<br /> While prevention is always the best medicine, it’s certainly not a  fail-safe. In case you DO find yourself with itchy feet, here are some  natural remedies that can help with Athlete’s Foot.<br /> <ol><li>Add 40 Drops of Organic Tea Tree Oil to a foot bath and soak your  feet for 10 minutes. After soaking and thoroughly drying the feet,  massage a few drops of the oil directly into the affected area. Tea tree  oil has properties that will help destroy the fungus in heavily  infested areas and deter it from spreading to unaffected areas.</li><li>Soak your feet in 2 tablespoons of Himalayan Crystal salt and ½ cup  Organic Apple Cider Vinegar solution mixed with some warm water. This  creates a very acidic environment in which the fungus cannot live. You  can also spray your feet or wipe them down with a cloth soaked in this  solution after you shower, just make sure you get them completely dry  afterwards. You can also wipe down the insides of shoes and sandals to  help prevent the fungus from clinging there.</li><li>Make your feet stinkier by placing slices of fresh garlic, or some  crushed garlic, between your toes and leaving them there for the day.  You can also add the garlic to foods you eat or take a garlic supplement  with the same effect, it just may take a little bit longer.</li><li>Using ozonated olive oil can also help with Athlete’s Foot. Use the  paste to swab your clean, dry feet each morning and night. This should  clear up the fungus within about two to four days and can be used as a  preventative measure against future outbreaks. I recommend the olive oil  paste such as 02-ZAP.</li><li>Sprinkle your toes with a little bit of organic corn starch or  baking soda before putting on your socks in the morning. The corn  starch/baking soda will help soak up moisture, but it wont stop the  itch. Baking soda in the shoes also helps to absorb some of that  not-so-pleasant sweaty foot smell.</li><li>Make a tea of 4 ounces of oregano leaves and just enough water to  cover your feet. Soak your feet 2-3 times daily in this mixture. I’ve  read that you can re-use this tea for a week, but I strongly recommend  making it fresh each day so that you know you are starting out with  fungus-free tea.</li><li>Sesame and Raw virgin coconut oil have anti-fungal properties and  can be applied directly to the feet. Swab it liberally on clean dry feet  with a cotton ball twice daily.</li><li>Colloidal Silver is another common remedy for athlete’s foot. Spray  or apply to your feet and let it fully dry. Alternatively, you can spray  and leave the silver on your feet overnight.</li><li>Organic Neem oil, sometimes used as a pesticide, is another all  natural oil that is toxic to harmful organisms. Apply to clean dry feet  with a cotton ball before going about your business.</li><li>You can also use Organic Ginger, just an ounce of fresh chopped  ginger added to a cup of boiling water and simmered for 20 minutes. Once  cooled, apply twice daily to clean feet. Ginger is a strong  anti-fungal, and your feet will have a pleasantly spicy smell.</li></ol>

Keep reading to find out all nine reasons you should  kick soda to the curb.<br /> <ol><li><div><h4>Weird Fat in Weird Places</h4></div>In the latest bad news for the soda industry, Danish researchers  discovered that drinking non-diet soda leads to dramatic increases in  fat buildup around your liver and your skeletal muscles, both of which  can contribute to insulin resistance and diabetes. The study revealed  that people who drank a regular soda every day for six months saw a 132  to 142 percent increase in liver fat, a 117 to 221 percent jump in  skeletal fat, and about a 30 percent increase in both triglyceride blood  fats and other organ fat. Their consumption also led to an 11 percent  increase in cholesterol, compared with the people who drank other  beverages such as water or milk.</li><li><div><h4>Diet-Soda Belly</h4></div>It’s not surprising that drinking all the sugar in sodas would cause  weight gain, but what is surprising is that even diet soda will pack on  the pounds: Researchers from the University of Texas Health Science  Center monitored 475 adults for 10 years, and found that those who drank  diet soda had a 70 percent increase in waist circumference over the  10-year study, compared with those who didn’t drink any soda. Those who  drank more than two diet sodas per day saw a 500 percent waist  expansion! A separate study the same researchers conducted on mice  suggested that it was the aspartame, which raised blood glucose levels,  that caused the weight gain; when your liver encounters too much  glucose, the excess is converted to body fat.</li><li><div><h4>Caramel Cancer-Causers</h4></div>In 2011, the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest  petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to ban the artificial  caramel coloring used to make Coke, Pepsi, and other colas brown. The  reason: Two contaminants in the coloring, 2-methylimidazole and  4-methylimidazole, have been found to cause cancer in animals, a threat  the group says is unnecessary, considering that the coloring is purely  cosmetic. According to California’s strict Proposition 65 list of  chemicals known to cause cancer, just 16 micrograms per person per day  of 4-methylimidazole is enough to pose a cancer threat, and most popular  brown colas, both diet and regular, contain 200 micrograms per 20-ounce  bottle.</li><li><div><h4>Accelerated Aging</h4></div>Diet or regular, all colas contain phosphates, or phosphoric acid, a  weak acid that gives colas their tangy flavor and improves their shelf  life. Although it exists in many whole foods, such as meat, dairy, and  nuts, too much phosphoric acid can lead to heart and kidney problems,  muscle loss, and osteoporosis, and one study suggests it could trigger  accelerated aging. The study, published in a 2010 issue of the <em>FASEB Journal</em>,  found that the excessive phosphate levels found in sodas caused lab  rats to die a full five weeks earlier than the rats whose diets had more  normal phosphate levels—a disturbing trend considering that soda  manufacturers have been increasing the levels of phosphoric acid in  their products over the past few decades.</li><li><div><h4>Water Pollution</h4></div>The artificial sweeteners used in diet sodas don’t break down in our  bodies, nor do wastewater-treatment plants catch them before they enter  waterways, researchers have found. In 2009, Swiss scientists tested  water samples from wastewater-treatment plants, rivers and lakes in  Switzerland and detected levels of acesulfame K, sucralose, and  saccharin, all of which are, or have been, used in diet sodas. A recent  test of 19 municipal water supplies in the U.S. revealed the presence of  sucralose in every one. It’s not clear yet what these low levels are  doing to people, but past research has found that sucralose in rivers  and lakes interferes with some organisms’ feeding habits.</li><li><div><h4>Mountain Dew Mind</h4></div>Dentists have a name for the condition they see in kids who drink too  much Mountain Dew. They wind up with a “Mountain Dew Mouth,” full of  cavities caused by the drink’s excessive sugar levels. “Mountain Dew  Mind” may be the next medical condition that gets named after the stuff.  An ingredient called brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, added to prevent  the flavoring from separating from the drink, is an industrial chemical  used as a flame retardant in plastics. Also found in other citrus-based  soft drinks and sports drinks, the chemical has been known to cause  memory loss and nerve disorders when consumed in large quantities.  Researchers also suspect that, like brominated flame retardants used in  furniture foam, the chemical builds up in body fat, possibly causing  behavioral problems, infertility, and lesions on heart muscles over  time.</li><li><div><h4>Whacked-Out Hormones</h4></div>It’s not just the soda that’s causing all the problems. Nearly all  aluminum soda cans are lined with an epoxy resin called bisphenol A  (BPA), used to keep the acids in soda from reacting with the metal. BPA  is known to interfere with hormones, and has been linked to everything  from infertility to obesity and diabetes and some forms of reproductive  cancers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have pegged soda  cans, along with restaurant, school, and fast-food meals, as a major  source of exposure to the chemical. And while Pepsi and Coke are  currently locked in a battle to see which company can be the first to  develop a 100 percent plant-based-plastic bottle—which they’re touting  as “BPA free”—neither company is willing to switch to BPA-free aluminum  cans.</li><li><div><h4>Dead Birds</h4></div>Before you switch from cans to bottles, though, take a look at the  photographs of Chris Jordan, an environmentalist and photographer who  visited the Midway Atoll area in 2009. It’s close to the “Great Pacific  Garbage Patch,” a mass of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean where  things like soda caps (which often aren’t recycled) and plastic fish  netting float just beneath the surface of the water. Birds, sea turtles,  and other wildlife mistake the debris for food and eat large quantities  of the plastic, which they are unable to digest. Ultimately, the  plastic causes them to starve to death. It’s estimated that thousands of  animals die this way every year.</li><li><div><h4>Unknown Side Effects of GMOs</h4></div>Take a look at the ingredients list for any soda and chances are most  of those ingredients are derived from corn. As much as 88 percent of  the corn grown in the U.S. is genetically modified to resist toxic  pesticides or engineered to create pesticides within the plant itself.  Thanks to lax government safety regulations, and tight corporate control  over who gets to test these proprietary seeds, there are no human  studies that can prove or disprove whether these crops are safe.  Independent scientists have found that, in animals, genetically modified  crops, or GMOs, are linked to digestive tract damage, accelerated  aging, and even infertility. Most recently, scientists in France found  that rats fed GMO corn for their entire two-year lifespan developed  mammary tumors and died earlier than rats that ate non-GMO corn their  entire lives.</li></ol><br />

So I  thought, why not to share something beneficial with you all? :)) Blood Group Diet is a concept introduced by Dr Peter J D Adamo,  author of “Eat right for your Type.” This diet propagates that our blood  group determines how our bodies deal with different nutrients. It is  based on the ideology that each blood group has its own antigen markers  and these markers have different responses with food components.  Consequently a diet designed specifically for your blood type allows  your body to digest and absorb food more efficiently, with the result  that you lose weight. It groups people into:</div><div style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span id="more-41175"><b>- High protein/ Meat eaters (Type O)<br />-Vegetarians (Type A)<br />– Balanced omnivore (Type B)<br />– Mixed diet moderation (Type AB).</b><br /><br />According to Dr. Peter J D Ádamo, author of Eat Right For Your Type, a chemical reaction occurs between your blood and the foods you eat. This reaction is part of your genetic inheritance. This reaction is caused by a factor called Lectins. Lectins, abundant and diverse proteins found in foods, have agglutinating properties that affect your blood. So when you eat a food containing protein lectins that are incompatible with your blood type antigen, the Lectins target an organ or bodily system and begin to agglutinate blood cells in that area.<br /><br />Fortunately, most lectins found in the diet are not quite so life threatening, although they can cause a variety of other problems, especially if they are specific to a particular blood type. For the most part your immune systems protect you from lectins. Ninety-five percent of the lectins you absorb from your typical diets are sloughed off by the body. But at least five percent of the lectins you eat are filtered into the bloodstream and different reactions occur in different organs.<br /><br />Your blood type diet is the restoration of your natural genetic rhythm. Unlike the other blood types, Type Os muscle tissue should be slightly on the acid side. Type Os can efficiently digest and metabolize meat because they tend to have high stomach-acid content. The success of the Type O Diet depends on the use of lean, chemical-free meats, poultry, and fish. Type Os don’t find dairy products and grains quite as user friendly as do most of the other blood types.<br /><br />-The initial weight loss on the Type O Diet is by restricting consumption of grains, breads, legumes, and beans.<br /><br />-The leading factor in weight gain for Type Os is the gluten found in wheat germ and whole wheat products, which interferes with insulin efficiency and slow down metabolic rate.<br /><br />-Another factor that contribute to weight gain is certain beans and legumes (lentils and kidney beans) contain lectins that deposit in the muscle tissues making them less “charged” for physical activity.<br /><br />-The third factor in Type O weight gain is that Type Os have a tendency to have low levels of thyroid hormone or unstable thyroid functions, which also cause metabolic problems.<br /><br />-Therefore it is good to avoid food that inhibits thyroid hormone (cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, mustard green) but increase hormone production (kelp, seafood, iodized salt).<br /><br />-Several classes of vegetables can cause big problems for Type Os, such as the Brassica family (cabbage, cauliflower, etc.) can inhibit the thyroid function. Eat more vegetables that are high in Vitamin K, which helps the clotting factor which is weak in Type Os. The nightshade vegetables can cause lectin deposit in the tissue surrounding the joints.<br /><br />-Because of the high acidity stomach, Type Os should eat fruits of alkaline nature such as berries and plums..<br /><br />-Type Os should severely restrict the use of dairy products. Their system is not designed for the proper metabolism. If you are a Type O of African ancestry, you should eliminate dairy foods and eggs altogether.<br /><br /><br /><h2><b>Blood Type Diet – Type A</b></h2>My blood group is Type A, I am not fond of meat much but I love mangoes and that is not allowed for my blood type. :(<br /><br />– Type As flourish on vegetarian diets Type As are predisposed to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. It is particularly important for sensitive Type As to get their foods in as natural a state as possible: fresh, pure, and organic. When you get on the Type A Diet, you will naturally be thinner. If you are accustomed to eating meat, you’ll lose weight rather rapidly in the beginning as you eliminate the toxic foods from your diet. And when you follow the Type diet, you can supercharge your immune system and potentially short-circuit the development of life-threatening diseases.<br /><br />-When Type As eat meat, they experience sluggishness. Type As have low stomach-acid content, therefore they have a hard time digesting meat. Since Type As eat very little animal protein, nuts and seeds supply an important protein component.<br /><br />-Type As also thrive on the vegetable proteins found in beans and legumes, except those mentioned for the “Avoid” list. These beans can cause a decrease in insulin production, which may cause obesity and diabetes. Tofu should be a staple in the Type A Diet.<br /><br />-Dairy foods are also poorly digested by Type As, and can cause metabolic slowdown. Type As can tolerate small amounts of fermented dairy products such as yogurt, kefir, nonfat sour cream, and cultured dairy products.<br /><br />-Vegetables are vital to the Type A Diet, providing minerals, enzymes and antioxidants. Type A are very sensitive to the lectins in potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, cabbage, tomatoes and peppers. They aggravate the delicate stomach of Type A. Type A should eat more fruits that are alkaline, avoid mangoes, papaya and oranges for they are not good for your digestive tract.<br /><br /><h2> Blood Type Diet – Type B</h2>-The sturdy and alert Type Bs are usually able to resist many of the most severe diseases common to modern life, such as heart disease and cancer. In fact, a Type B who carefully follows the recommended diet can often bypass severe disease and live a long and healthy life. Types Bs are more prone to immune-system disorders such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, and chronic fatigue syndrome.<br /><br />-The Type B Diet is balance and wholesome, including a wide variety of foods.<br /><br />-For Type Bs, the biggest factors in weight gain are corn, buckwheat, lentils, peanuts and sesame seeds. These foods have different lectin that affect the efficiency of the metabolic process, resulting in fatigue, fluid retention, and hypoglycemia. The gluten lectin in wheat germ and whole wheat products also adds to the problems cause by other metabolism-slowing foods.<br /><br />-It is important to leave off chicken for Type Bs. Chicken contains a Blood Type B agglutinating lectin in its muscle tissue, which attack the bloodstream and potentially lead to strokes and immune disorders.<br /><br />-Type Bs thrive on deep-ocean fish, but should avoid all shellfish. The shellfish contain lectins that are disruptive to the Type B system.<br /><br />-Type B is the only blood type that can fully enjoy a variety of dairy foods. Most nuts and seeds(especially peanuts, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds) are not advised for Type Bs., they contain lectins that interfere with Type B insulin production.<br /><br />-Wheat is not tolerated well by most Type Bs. They contain a lectin that reduce insulin efficiency and failure to stimulate fat “burning”. Rye contains a lectin that settles in the vascular system, causing blood disorders and potentially strokes. Corn and buckwheat are major factors in Type B weight gain, they contribute to a sluggish metabolism, insulin irregularity, fluid retention, and fatigue.<br /><br />-Eliminate tomatoes completely from Type B diet. It has lectins that irritate the stomach lining. Fruits and vegetables are generally well tolerated and should be taken generously.<br /><br /><h2>Blood Type Diet – Type AB</h2>-Multiple antigens make Type ABs sometimes A-like with weak stomach acid, and sometimes B-like with genetically programmed for the consumption of meats. Type AB do best when their muscle tissues are slightly alkaline. Type ABs can’t metabolize meat efficiently because of low stomach acid, so it is important to watch the portion size and frequency. Chicken has lectin that irritates the blood and digestive tracts of Type ABs also. Tofu is a good protein supplements for Type ABs. Nuts, seeds, beans and legumes present a mixed picture for Type ABs. Eat nuts and seeds in small amounts and with caution.<br /><br />-Type ABs can tolerate dairy foods fairly well. But watch out for excessive mucus production.<br /><br />-Generally Type ABs do well on grains, even wheat, but keep in mind that the inner kernel of the wheat grain is highly acid forming in the muscle for Type ABs. Type AB benefits from a diet rich in rice rather than pasta.<br /><br />-Type ABs has a weaker immune system, so you will benefit from the vegetables, which are high in phytochemicals and the more alkaline fruits, which can help to balance the grains that are acid forming in the muscle tissues. Netanyahu said this is  just the first phase of the demilitarization of Gaza.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph5">While U.S. officials have  called on Israel to do more to protect civilians, the United States has  agreed to Israel's request to resupply it with several types of  ammunition, a U.S. defense official told CNN on condition of anonymity.  It's not an emergency sale, the official said.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph6">Among the items being  bought are 120mm mortar rounds and 40mm ammunition for grenade  launchers, the official said. Those will come from a stockpile the  United States keeps in Israel, which is worth more than $1 billion.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph8"><strong>Shells land near U.N. school</strong></div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph9">Meanwhile, a number of  shells fell Thursday next to a U.N. school housing displaced residents  -- a day after another school-turned-shelter was hit by artillery  killing more than a dozen people.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph10">"The school itself was  not targeted, it was nearby the school," Adnan Abu Hasna, a spokesman  for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), said about the  Thursday incident.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph11">No one was killed inside the school -- the Beit Lahiya School for Girls, he said. And the Palestinian Health Ministry said 20 were killed.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph18">"Children killed in  their sleep; this is an affront to all of us, a source of universal  shame," Pierre Krahenbuhl, head of the U.N. agency for Palestinians. "Artillery should never be used against targets in  crowded civilian areas and its use in such a manner would never be  considered a 'surgical' strike."</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph26">Israel has said errant Hamas rocket fire is responsible for some of the attacks in Gaza.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph28"><strong>Market attac</strong><strong>k</strong></div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph29">At the same time Wednesday, back-to-back attacks on a market in northern Gaza killed 17 people, the Gaza health ministry said.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph30"><a href="http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/world/2014/07/30/erin-sot-vause-gaza-market-attack.cnn&video_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FQSjKw1QThT">Video shot by the Gaza-based al-Manara media agency </a>show  ambulances racing to the scene after the first strike. Seconds later,  the second attack sends people diving for cover. The video shows people  on the ground, screaming and groaning. Some of the bodies are limbless,  others blown apart.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph32"><strong>Calls for civilian protection</strong></div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph33">The conflict in Gaza is  more than three weeks old now and has left 1,373 people dead and more  than 7,000 wounded, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. About 70%  to 80% of the fatalities are Palestinian civilians, the U.N. estimates.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph34">On the Israeli side, 56 soldiers have died, as well as three civilians.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph35">The violence between  Israel's military and Palestinian militants is playing out against a  backdrop of failed humanitarian cease-fire attempts, with militants  firing rockets from Gaza into Israel and Israelis responding with  airstrikes.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph36">On Wednesday, Israel authorized a four-hour "humanitarian window" in Gaza, but it lasted nowhere near that long.</div><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="em6"></a><br /><br /><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph37">A large part of the criticism has been leveled at Israel and its airstrikes, which have bombarded Gaza.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph38">Chile, Peru, Brazil and Ecuador have pulled their ambassadors out of Tel Aviv to protest the Israeli offensive.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph39">Israel, in turn, has accused Hamas of hiding weapons, including rockets, in schools and launching attacks from near shelters.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph40">While saying Israel has a  right to defend itself, White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz  said, "We've also been very clear that Israel needs to do more to live  up to its own standards to limit civilian casualties."</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph41">It was a sentiment echoed by U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph42">"Hamas is taking steps here that put civilians at risk. But we do believe the Israelis need to do more," she said.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph44"><strong>'This is a disaster'</strong></div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph45">The incessant attacks and counterattacks are taking a terrible toll on Gazans.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph46">More than 219,000  Palestinians are packed into 86 shelters across Gaza, the U.N. said.  That equals about 12% of all of Gaza's population.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph47">A strike Tuesday  severely damaged Gaza's only power plant, forcing residents to depend  almost entirely on small generators for electricty.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph48">Israel said it did not target the plant, and that a Hamas rocket may have been to blame.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph49">Clean water is inaccessible for most. And some 3,600 people have lost their homes.</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph50">"We cannot supply  electricity" for hospitals, sewage treatment or domestic use, said Fathi  al-Sheikh Khalil, deputy chairman of the Palestinian Energy Natural  Resources Authority in Gaza. "This is a disaster."</div><div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph51">The Israeli foreign  ministry said it sent 43 trucks carrying 750 tons of food, medicine and  supplies to Gaza on Wednesday. It also said it sent fuel.</div>
