Sen. Uche Chukwumerije
Nigerian Senate today being tuesday adjourned sitting untill Wednesday, April 22, so as to mourn the late lawmaker, Uche Chukwumerije​,​ who passed away on Sunday.


Before the adjournment, lawmakers observed a minute silence in his honour.

The ​p​resident of the Senate, David Mark, while paying tribute to the late lawmaker, said ​Mr. Chukwumerije​’s death was a personal loss for him.

He said Mr. Chukwumerije will be greatly missed by the National Assembly and all Nigerians.

“For me it is a sense of personal loss because for almost eight years, he sat directly behind me and that offered us an opportunity for interaction.

“He will be missed because he was iconic, eclectic and an unusual Nigerian.

“For him, integrity was more important than material acquisition.

“He was more concerned about his place”, he said.

Mr. Mark said the deceased was known for “his ability to speak the truth at all times.

“Even when he is of the minority side, he will still stand by the truth​,​’’ said Mr Mark.

Mr. Mark also said Mr. Chukwumerije should be seen as a national leader and not a regional.

The senate leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, described the late lawmaker as a patriot, who loved his job, Nigeria and the National Assembly.

Mr Mark and other lawmakers paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased at his Abuja residence.

The late Uche Chukwumerije represented Abia North Senatorial District in the 7th Senate.

He was first elected as a Senator in 2003. He served as the Minister of Information under regimes of Ibrahim Babangida and the interim national government of Ernest Shonekan.

The 75-year-old lost his life to lung cancer at the Turkish hospital in Abuja on Sunday evening. The details of the burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
