President Buhari has ordered the immediate dismantling of all military checkpoints across Nigeria be dismantled immediately, the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismail, as saying.
Details of the directive are still being awaited, and it is unclear whether checkpoints in states in the North-east, set up in the wake of the Boko Haram insurgency, would also be removed.
Military checkpoints multiplied across Nigeria after the insurgency intensified, causing terrible traffic snarls and subjecting commuters to untold hardship.
However, security experts repeatedly argued that it was better for Nigerians to bear the inconveniences caused by military checkpoints than allow Boko Haram insurgents free passages to targets in cities.
