It is not just webcams for large business being focused, footage is being collected from CCTV networks to baby monitors.
And reports today say that at least six properties in Cardiff are among those which have had their webcams hacked by a website based in Russia.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) recommends a few steps to make sure people are not able to access your web cam.
Change the default password
When you first get your camera it will have a simple default password, such as ‘password’ or ‘abcd’, but whatever you are given as the original password CHANGE it.
And when you change the password do not make it one that is easily guessed.
Check security settings
Accessing your camera via the internet is one of the main reasons people purchase a webcam, so if you are able to access the came online so can others.
So when setting up your device read the manual and the security options.
And as a last resort, the ICO recommends, covering the lens.
Don’t just stop with your webcam
Take the time to look at all the security settings for all the devices you use. A lot of personal information is stored on laptops and devices, plus you can also store files in cloud servers.
Hacking information and pictures was recently brought to light with the personal photographs of Hollywood celebrities being released.
Some cloud services give you the option to use a two-step authentication. This can mean that your information would remain secure even your password has compromised.
So ensure that your passwords are strong. You can get information on choosing better passwords at Get Safe Online.
