Sen. Uche Chukwumerije
On Monday, President Jonathan sent his condolences message to the Chukwumerije family, the government and the Abia State people to commiserate with them on the death of Uche Chukwumerije, a senator.


The president’s sentiment was expressed in a statement by his spokesperson, Reuben Abati.

President Jonathan also commiserated with the Senate over Mr. Chukwumerije’s death.

Mr. Chukwumerije’s death from lung cancer was announced by his family on Sunday.

Mr. Jonathan said Mr. Chukwumerije was an ardent believer in national unity, peace, political stability and progress.

The president said he joined them in mourning the late patriot and nationalist, who had left behind an impressive legacy of discipline, honesty, integrity and hard work in public service.

Mr. Jonathan said he believed the Mr. Chukwumerije, who had a distinguished career as a journalist, social critic, Minister of Information and Senator, will be long remembered for his dedication and passion for a just and equitable society.

“As the nation mourns him, the president urges Mr. Chukwumerije’s family, friends and associates to honour his memory by continually upholding the values and principles which he lived for and never stopped fighting for till his death,” the statement said.

“President Jonathan prays that Almighty God will comfort all who mourn him and grant his soul perfect peace.”
