Former Ebonyi State governor, Martin Elechi |
On Tuesday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission grilled the former governor of Ebonyi State, Martin Elechi.
Elechi, who arrived at the Wuse, Abuja office of the commission at 10am along with some of his former commissioners, was accused of misappropriating public funds while in office.
The former governor, who left office on May 29, after a second term, could not be quizzed while in office by the commission because he had constitutional immunity against prosecution.
The anti-graft agency had on January 29, 2015 questioned the former governor’s son, Nnanna, on allegations of money laundering and embezzlement.
The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that Elechi was being interrogated following allegations of misappropriation of public funds.
When asked if he would be detained overnight, Uwujaren said he did not know. He asked our correspondent to call back for an update.
But attempts to ascertain whether the former governor was detained overnight or not were not successful as several calls made to Uwujaren’s mobile telephone at 6.45pm failed to connect.
He also did not respond to a text message that was sent to him.
